Underground Bunker - Facebook Challenge

A family of 8. A Mother, A Father, Two Child Daughters, Two Child Sons, Two Teenage Daughters.

For years Paul, the patriarch of the family, has been reading up on the apocalypse. It will happen one day, he knows it. He shares his research with his family, who see the truth in what he's found.

Secretly for years, Paul has been building a secret underground bunker to accommodate his large family in the event of the apocalypse. Chances are, they won't be able to go above ground. There may be some risk-takers who try to attack and steal from homes, so it needs to appear derelict and without the chance for any beneficial theft.

He bought an old little home and made it look as abandoned as possible. Then, he builds the bunker. Allow me to take you into the bunker, and show you Paul's work.

The Bunker

The original structure seems to warn people away before they can get too close

In the back, a small shed with a locked door looks unassuming.

But inside, there is a stairway down to the survival bunker

A locked and coded door allowing only Paul's family inside greets you at the bottom of these stairs

Inside, you immediately enter the kitchen. Piping and wiring draws electricity from aboveground solar panels and means that keeping rationed food fresh will be a little easier

There is also a table - only enough space for six, but that's okay. The chairs can fold away too, for extra space.

There are two bathrooms, identical in design. A sturdy sink with piping up to an aboveground water purifier is placed beside a renewable-water-source shower. There is also a laundry basket and a washbasin (and a washing line, which I didn't get a picture of - oops!)

The toilet is a small structure due to the fact that it uses chemicals and recycled water to keep clean

There are four bedrooms within the bunker. The first bedroom is for the two sons. Two beds with personal chests and photos from home decorate this room.

There is a science lab and an art table so that the children can continue to learn the essentials of life while living underground

Beside this is the room for the two child-age daughters. Similar beds and chests are in this room, alongside a pet frog for company, and some old posters to bring colour to the room. There is also a violin for music lessons

A teddy bear for company, a toy chest, and a doll for empathy training

The bedroom for the two teen daughters is smaller due to the need for less stuff. The two beds have some under bed storage and old posters and sketches by the girls adorn the walls

They also have a proper dresser and mirrors, because even underground the teens need to continue to be taught the importance of self-appearance

Finally, for the bedrooms, the parent's room consists of a wooden bed, some plants, and a painting on the wall that gives the illusion of a window into the outside world.

They too have a dresser and mirrors, practising what they preach when it comes to self-appearance

Next up is the garden. This room has been designed to give the illusion of being outside and can help combat cabin fever. It also brings some much-needed colour to the bunker and gives the opportunity for growing food - this will be very important as during the challenge the family will only be able to cook meals when they have all of the ingredients.

The garden has two glass doors so that the two remaining rooms can have the appearance of exterior doors

The first of these rooms is a small living room. This has a TV (wired to the upstairs solar panels), two bookshelves (one for entertainment reading, one for skills), and some more plants

The other of the rooms is the skills room. In here there is a chess table for logic, a guitar and easel for creativity, and a treadmill to keep the family in shape

And that's the bunker. Here is a floorplan of it. I may do this challenge and post updates on a secondary blog - If I do I will add the link here!
